LONG GONE PROJECT

2017 - 2018

This project was the focus of the Individual Project module at Bradford University.

I decided to create a Unreal Game from scratch, from this I hope to gain more knowledge of Unreal Engine 4 and different pipelines.

I started with a bunch of research in order to gather as much inspiration as I could about the project as a whole. This ranged from characters to environment to game play aspects.

I spent a total of three weeks on the character as I felt that was a major part of my project. I used Maya and Mudbox to add as much detail as I could and to capture that "Borderlands" style. This was achieved with texturing manipulation on Adobe Photoshop.

From then on I worked on the weapons in similar fashion by taking the textures into Photoshop and giving that style that the models need.

Once I had some basic models I then imported them all into Unreal Engine 4 and started working on the environment. I constantly modified and changed elements of the game for 3 months documenting everything on the way.

Over all this project has been a huge learning experience, one that I could only get from essentially playing around with the tools all whilst keeping a goal in mind. The original brief is quite different from what I have produced but I feel it was bound to change and evolve with time. The main features I like are the bow and arrow firing mechanic, the enemy AI and the little things like sprinting, crouching and even the day and night cycle. The major flaw with the game is that it is not finished and still has problems with the existing content. On the other hand, I am proud with what I have achieve considering it had been a few years since I used Unreal Engine 4.

In terms of what I would change, I would change the type of game it is so I did not have to waste the first few weeks when I did. This would have left more time to focus on other areas of development.

Other than the points I have already mentioned, I feel like I achieved what I wanted to do when I first set out on the project. I took the game as far as to burning it on a disc with easy access to the files. Not only have I made a product but also I gain the most knowledge I ever got with using Unreal Engine 4.
